An early morning, even car accident killed four people and has part of a busy interstate closed in Central Florida while police continue to investigate.
The accident took place along Interstate 4 just west of Lakeland. According to an FHP spokesperson to Tampa NBC affiliate WFLA-TV, one of the dead is a child.
Investigators say a pickup truck was traveling in the eastbound lanes when it crossed over into the westbound lanes, hitting multiple vehicles and causing several chain reaction crashes.
The two people inside the truck were ejected and died at the scene. The driver of a van that was hit by a cement truck as a result of the accident was also killed. The child was in another car involved in the crash.
Investigators have yet to confirm an exact cause, but they believe the truck did lose control while speeding down the interstate, which has remained closed while crews clean up the area and file reports.
