‘Say Yes to the Prom’ Gets 55 Miami Girls Ready for Big Night

The glitz and the glam of prom is coming early for a group of very deserving high school senior girls in South Florida.

Teens from several Miami schools spent Tuesday getting pampered, full hair and makeup as a dry run for the big night.

It's all possible thanks to TLC's "Say Yes to the Prom" initiative.

"The 'Say Yes to the Dress' show is really about female confidence, feeling secure, and feeling great about yourself so we decided to translate that brand into an initiative, a social initiative," said Adria Alpert-Romm.

A total of 55 girls were chosen by school counselors for their high achievement in school despite economic challenges at home.

"Not everyone gets this opportunity and the fact that I'm chosen to get it, it's a blessing," said Lisa Pierre. "It's a dream that a girl wants, who doesn't want to be dressed up and have your makeup and hair done."

Not only did they get a makeover, each girl got to pick a dress, shoes and accessories, all free. Then there was the big reveal, a runway walk at the Biltmore Hotel.

"This recognition of these very needy but deserving kids is close to my heart," Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said. "Number one, I identify with them, I grew up in poverty, this is the second year we created this event."

"My mom doesn't work so this opportunity was big for me, I wouldn't have made it to prom without this," Ashley Walker said.

In addition to prom, each student can receive a two-year scholarship to Miami Dade College and will get a laptop from TLC.
